Problem Statement

How can we motivate individuals to foster a sense of individual accountability towards maintaining a healthy and sustainable local environment, and how can the community collaborate to ensure the preservation of the ecosystem for future generations?

Research Insight

E-waste disposal has negative effects on the environment, human health and loss of valuable materials. Improper disposal of electronic devices like computers and mobile phones can release toxic chemicals and heavy metals, polluting air, water and soil and posing health risks. Furthermore, e-waste contains valuable materials that can be recovered through recycling, but a significant amount ends up in landfills or exported to developing countries where it is often handled in a dangerous and environmentally harmful way.

To mitigate these issues, steps must be taken to increase recycling and proper disposal, and creation of products that are longer lasting, repairable and recyclable.

E-waste is a popular, informal name for electronic products nearing the end of their "useful life." Many of these products can be reused, refurbished, or recycled.

This leaves us to the question -

Does the end of useful life cycle solely determine if an electronic product is E-Waste?

E-waste is on the rise with society's increased dependence on technology and constant need for upgrades. This results in disposing of old or not so old devices, which harms the environment. As a result, there is a need of sustainable consumption practices and proper disposal of electronic waste is crucial.

Insights from Primary Research

Donations can be made out of generosity or as a way to get rid of unwanted items, but there are often trust issues with NGOs due to a lack of transparency in how donations are used. Additionally, many people may not be aware of recycling methods and recyclers in their area, and may be too lazy to research and acquire details on how to properly recycle or donate their items. This lack of knowledge and interest can also contribute to a lack of awareness about the NGOs and recyclers available in their community.
